Motherhood

This collection of drawings emerged from my early years of motherhood. Trying to come to grips with my new role and its claim on my heart and mind, I entered an experimental period with my studio work. For the first time, I reached to abstraction to give visual form to unfamiliar states of mind and extremes of fatigue and love and fear that I had not experienced before. Simultaneously, I returned to figuration, using a process of pulling the human figure from an abstract composition, and building my daughter’s likeness from memory alone.

This was an intense but fragmented work period, and as such the work is both intensely personal and somewhat inconsistent. Most of the drawings have never been exhibited.
